PRK was the first type of laser eye surgery for vision correction and it was the predecessor to the popular C-LASIK and ReLEx® SMILE® procedures.
In C-LASIK, a thin flap is created in cornea with a microkeratome. This flap is lifted to expose the underlying corneal tissue and is replaced by a doctor after the cornea is reshaped with an excimer laser.
In PRK, a thin outer layer of cornea called epithelium is removed and discarded prior to reshaping the underlying corneal tissue with an excimer laser. Removed epithelium heals itself within few days after surgery.
PRK uses a Blade for remove a thin layer of your cornea called epithelium.
A thin layer of cornea is removed and discarded in this so you will have some discomfort. PRK recovery is slower compared to C-LASIK, Contoura Vision and ReLEx® SMILE®. There is also slightly increased risk of eye infection and blur vision in the initial days after surgery. Vision improvement is gradual and final outcome can take several weeks.
We recommend PRK to a very specific group of patients where flap is not possible with C-LASIK. We need to see your case in detail to recommend the best vision correction method for you.
