If we see our eyes as a camera, the cornea would be the glass at the front of the camera lens. , the cornea serves as a barrier against dirt, germs, and other particles that can harm the eye's delicate components. The cornea is also capable of filtering out some amounts of the sun's ultraviolet light. The cornea also plays a key role in vision. As light enters the eye, it is refracted, or bent, by the outside shape of the cornea. The curvature of this outer layer helps determine how well your eye can focus on objects close up and far away. If the cornea becomes damaged through disease, infection, or injury, the resulting scars or discoloration can interfere with vision by blocking or distorting light as it enters the eye.
Corneal disease is a serious condition that can cause clouding, distortion, scarring and if not treated timely, it can cause blindness. If you are experiencing Pain, Blurred Vision, Tearing, Redness, Extreme Light Sensitivity or Corneal Scarring, you should consult an experienced eye doctor immediately.

Keratoconus is a progressive disease in which the cornea thins and changes shape. Keratoconus changes the curvature of the cornea, creating either mild or severe distortion, called astigmatism, and usually nearsightedness. Keratoconus may also cause swelling and scarring of the cornea and partial to complete blindness.
Keratoconus can be genetic, can occur due to eye trauma, eye disease such as keratoconjunctivitis. At first, this can be treated with glasses or soft contact lenses. A corneal transplant may be necessary in certain cases. Corneal Crosslinking is a newer treatment that uses a special type of stabilize the cornea and slower the progression of Keratoconus.

A pterygium a wing-shaped, vascular, fleshy growth that originates on the conjunctiva and that can spread to the corneal limbus and beyond. Ultraviolet radiation from the sun appears to be the primary cause for the development and growth of pterygia, dust and wind are also the factor.
Pterygia usually occur on the side of the eye closer to the nose, but they can also develop on the side closer to the ear as well and can affect one eye or both eyes. Many people with mild Pterygia may not experience symptoms. But pterygia often cause a gritty, itchy or burning sensation or the feeling something is "in" the eye. Also, these pterygia often become inflamed, causing red eyes.
